Dear friends of Porter Flea:
We’re writing you in mourning, in gratitude, and with renewed pride and purpose.
As some of you may have already heard, our co-organizer, Melinda Vance, passed away late last year after a brief and sudden illness. Melinda (aka Momma Flea) was instrumental to the event’s success from the beginning, providing wisdom, strength and the warm and kind support that everyone who knew her benefited from. Melinda was the beloved Mother of co-organizer Katie Vance and mother in law to Katie's husband Matt Alexander.
Vendors, organizers and sponsors knew Melinda Vance as an advocate whose dedication and enthusiasm were unwavering. She focused, without fail, on ensuring that everyone — from the makers who’d traveled long distances to our devoted Flea shoppers — left with the feeling that Porter Flea was built on kindness, creativity and love. It’s a spirit that we’re devoted to upholding as we move forward - that's exactly what Momma Flea would have wanted. Melinda’s personal and professional contributions are irreplaceable, but her loving, giving spirit will always be at the core of Porter Flea.
On June 16 and 17, we’ll host the 2017 Porter Flea Summer Market in Melinda’s honor, again at Skyway Studios in East Nashville. We’ll kick off with a ticketed Friday Preview Market (6 to 9 p.m.), and open’s Saturday Main Market to the public, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with another broad, talented mix of local and regional vendors. Applications will open for our Summer Market via our website on Monday, March 6th.
We’ll share a lot more in the coming weeks — we’re also in the early planning stages of an initiative called Makers for Melinda, to celebrate her admiration of and devotion to the artists and artisans that make up the Porter Flea community. But in the meantime, we wanted to let our friends know that we’ll be celebrating and honoring Melinda by continuing to pour our hearts into something she loved and helped build.
We hope to see you at Skyway Studios this June, and we hope that our Summer Market, and the Porter Flea markets to come, will continue to be a place where people inspired by creativity can come together and celebrate and support each other.
With our thanks,
The Porter Flea family
